Mount Ararat

A high-altitude, two-camp ascent on Turkey’s highest mountain. The route is not a technical rock climb in normal summer conditions, but altitude, cold, snow and weather make it a serious expedition.

Highest point: 5,137 m

Before you pack

Requirements first. Equipment second.

Use this as a preparation guide for the selected mountain. The season, route, weather and guide’s assessment always determine the final list.

Planning note

Authorization, route choice, camp position and equipment can change with local decisions, snow and weather. Treat the confirmed TAF Travel equipment check as final.

Mountain requirements

  • Foreign climbers need advance authorization for Mount Ararat because it lies within a military and security zone. TAF Travel coordinates the current application route and approved access before departure.
  • The ascent must be accompanied by an authorized Turkish mountain host or guide. Send passport and travel details early so the current authorization process can be checked in time.
  • Prepare for a long summit day, nights at high camps, cold temperatures and rapid weather changes. Strong fitness and previous multi-day trekking preparation are essential.
  • The final route can require crampons, an ice axe, a helmet and mountaineering boots. The guide confirms the technical setup for the current snow and ice conditions.

Personal equipment

  • Mountaineering boots suitable for crampons
  • Crampons and an ice axe when required by the route plan
  • Helmet, trekking poles and a headlamp with spare batteries
  • Layered insulation, warm hat, gloves with spare pair and waterproof shell
  • Sleeping bag suited to cold high-camp nights
  • Glacier sunglasses or goggles, sunscreen and lip protection
  • Two water bottles or a hydration system and personal medication
  • Passport, travel insurance details and a small daypack

What TAF Travel arranges
