Kazbegi · Georgia

Mount Kazbek

A glaciated Caucasus ascent with acclimatization, rope work, crampon travel and a weather reserve day.

Highest point: 5,054 m

Before you pack

Requirements first. Equipment second.

Use this as a preparation guide for the selected mountain. The season, route, weather and guide’s assessment always determine the final list.

Planning note

Kazbek weather and glacier conditions can change quickly. A reserve day is part of the planning, not a guarantee of a summit.

Mountain requirements

  • Parts of the Kazbek region are affected by Georgia’s state-border regime. TAF Travel checks the current access, route permissions and any registration needed for the planned itinerary.
  • This is guided glacier travel. Participants must be ready to learn and use a harness, rope, crampons, helmet, ice axe and self-arrest technique.
  • Good mountain fitness and previous experience carrying a pack on steep, uneven terrain are required. The guide may change the plan for altitude, crevasses or weather.
  • Carry a passport and insurance that covers high-altitude mountaineering, rescue and evacuation. Confirm visa and entry requirements for your nationality separately before travel.

Personal equipment

  • Mountaineering boots compatible with crampons
  • Crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness and suitable glacier clothing
  • Warm base layers, insulated jacket, waterproof shell and overtrousers
  • Gloves with spare pair, warm hat, neck protection and sunglasses
  • Headlamp with spare batteries and a durable daypack
  • Sleeping bag, sleeping mat if not included, water bottles and thermos
  • Personal medication, high-altitude insurance details and passport

What TAF Travel arranges

  • Several Kazbek programs include general climbing equipment, equipment checks, mountain accommodation and luggage support; the exact package differs by route.
  • Review the selected tour’s included and excluded services before packing or renting equipment.
