Mount Kilimanjaro

A non-technical but demanding high-altitude trek through several climate zones to Uhuru Peak.

Highest point: 5,895 m

Before you pack

Requirements first. Equipment second.

Use this as a preparation guide for the selected mountain. The season, route, weather and guide’s assessment always determine the final list.

Planning note

A successful summit depends on acclimatization, health and guide decisions. No equipment list can remove altitude risk.

Mountain requirements

  • Current TANAPA visitor guidance requires every climb to be arranged through a licensed operator; solo trekking is not permitted.
  • Park, conservation, camping or hut and rescue fees vary by visitor category, route and number of days. TAF Travel confirms the current charges within the final proposal.
  • Marangu uses mountain huts. Lemosho uses designated tented camps operated through licensed providers. The selected route determines the overnight equipment and daily rhythm.
  • Choose an itinerary with acclimatization time, ascend slowly and report headache, nausea, confusion, breathing difficulty or other altitude symptoms to the guide immediately.

Personal equipment

  • Broken-in hiking boots and comfortable trekking socks
  • Layering system from warm-weather hiking to summit cold
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers, fleece or insulated jacket and warm hat
  • Warm gloves, headlamp with spare batteries and sunglasses
  • Trekking poles, daypack, water bottles and personal medication
  • Sleeping bag suitable for the selected route and season
  • Sun protection, insect protection and small personal first-aid supplies
  • Passport, travel insurance details and any required travel documents

What TAF Travel arranges

  • Licensed operators arrange park access, guides, route accommodation, meals and support staff according to the confirmed package.
  • Marangu and Lemosho use different accommodation systems, so do not assume that tent equipment or hut bedding is interchangeable.
