Use this as a preparation guide for the selected mountain. The season, route, weather and guide’s assessment always determine the final list.
Planning note
Toubkal conditions are seasonal. A summer hiking list is not sufficient for a winter or early-spring summit attempt.
Mountain requirements
- The route is in Toubkal National Park. Arrange a qualified local mountain guide and confirm the current route and refuge arrangements before travel.
- Mule and porter support can reduce the load on the trekking sections, but each participant still needs a daypack with water, layers and personal essentials.
- In snow or icy conditions, crampons and an ice axe may be required. The guide decides the equipment for the season and current route.
- Good fitness, suitable footwear, travel insurance and preparation for sun, wind, cold nights and rapid changes in mountain weather are required.
Personal equipment
- Sturdy hiking boots with good grip
- Daypack, water bottles or hydration system and trekking poles
- Warm layers, waterproof jacket and overtrousers
- Warm hat, gloves, sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Headlamp with spare batteries and personal medication
- Sleeping bag for refuge nights if not supplied or rented locally
- Crampons and ice axe when confirmed for the season
- Passport, insurance details and a small amount of local currency
