Mount Elbrus · overview

About Elbrus from the South

The southern route is the most popular and relatively easy way to climb Mount Elbrus. It starts with the landscapes and cuisine of the Baksan Valley, builds altitude through Mount Cheget and Devichi Kosi waterfall, and uses the cable car to reach the mountain hut before the summit push.

Mount Elbrus · itinerary

Full itinerary · Elbrus from the South

The itinerary follows the source-based Elbrus program, presented in the TAF Travel format for future reference.

Day 1

01

Arrival and transfer to Elbrus

Meet at Mineralnye Vody Airport, or arrive through Tbilisi the day before. Transfer to the local office for equipment distribution, a group briefing, and the journey to the Elbrus region. Overnight in a hostel or 3-star hotel according to the selected tariff.

Day 2

02

Mount Cheget

Hike Mount Cheget with light daypacks and a packed lunch. Your instructor introduces walking and breathing techniques, and the summit area opens views over Mount Elbrus and the Baksan Gorge. Descend by cable car to preserve energy.

Day 3

03

Devichi Kosi waterfall

Continue acclimatization with a walk to Devichi Kosi waterfall, lunch, and an optional refreshing dip. The route continues toward the Observatory before returning to the hotel in the evening.

Day 4

04

Mountain hut and skills training

Take the funicular up the snowy slope of Elbrus and settle into the mountain hut. The guides teach rope-traverse technique and walking in crampons on snow and ice.

Day 5

05

Acclimatization to 5,000 m

Make the main acclimatization ascent, gaining about 1,200 metres toward 5,000 metres. Reaching at least 4,700 metres is required for a normal summit attempt; the guide will adapt the plan to the group and conditions.

Day 6

06

Rest and summit preparation

Rest before the climb, practice self-arrest with an ice axe, review the mountain skills, and prepare packs for the ascent. The day may be used for the climb instead if the weather window requires it.

Day 7

07

Summit day

Start around midnight for the summit attempt. The group climbs roped and in crampons with ice axes, helmets, headlamps, hot drinks, and snacks. The ascent generally takes 8–10 hours, followed by a 3–4 hour descent to the mountain hut.

Day 8

08

Descent to the valley

Descend by cable car and return to the hotel. The group coordinates the rest of the day on site, with options such as a forest walk or Russian banya at an additional cost. The day can also serve as a reserve summit day.

Day 9

09

End of the tour

After breakfast, transfer toward Essentuki and stop at Narzan Meadows. Continue by individual transfer to the airport; return flights should be booked after the recommended departure times.
