About Mount Kazbek & Chaukhi Climbing

The source itinerary starts in Stepantsminda, travels to Juta and Chaukhi, then continues through Sameba Trinity Church, the Meteo Station, an acclimatization day, the Kazbek summit attempt, a reserve day, and the descent home.

The itinerary is adapted from the supplied Mount Kazbek program and arranged in the TAF Travel format.

Day 1

01

Arrival in Stepantsminda

Meet at the MTA office and check in to a comfortable guesthouse in Stepantsminda at about 1,700 metres.

Day 2

02

Juta and the Chaukhi massif

Transfer to Juta and continue toward the Chaukhi massif at about 3,850 metres. Acclimatize around Rcheulishvili Peak, then return to Stepantsminda for the night.

Day 3

03

Ascent to the Meteo Station

Transfer to Sameba Trinity Church, collect the luggage support, and trek for approximately seven to eight hours toward the Meteo Station. Overnight in tents or inside the station as arranged.

Day 4

Acclimatization day

Use the day to adjust to altitude and return to the Meteo Station for another night in the mountain environment.

Day 5

Mount Kazbek summit day

Start at approximately 2:00 a.m. for the Kazbek summit attempt. The ascent and return take around twelve hours, after which the group rests at the Meteo Station.

Day 6

Reserve day

Keep a reserve day for changing weather and a repeat summit attempt when conditions require it.

Day 7

07

Descent to Stepantsminda

The horse guide carries the luggage down while the group descends from the Meteo Station. Transfer from Sameba Trinity Church completes the mountain section.

Day 8

08

Departure

Depart Georgia with the memory of the Chaukhi and Mount Kazbek expedition.

Kazbek routes include glacial terrain, rope skills and fast-changing Caucasus weather. Personal technical equipment differs by program even when general gear is included. This checklist follows the selected route, season, accommodation, and published inclusions. Read the four categories separately: bring, consider, provided, and confirm or rent.

Essential personal equipment

  • Passport and a copy stored separately
  • Travel insurance that covers the route, rescue and evacuation where relevant
  • Personal medication and any prescription details
  • Comfortable daypack for water, layers and personal essentials
  • Water bottles or hydration system sized for the day
  • Headlamp with spare batteries
  • Sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen and lip protection
  • Glacier glasses or ski goggles with reliable UV protection
  • Waterproof jacket and overtrousers
  • Layered clothing with a warm mid-layer and insulated jacket
  • Warm hat, neck protection and gloves with a spare pair
  • Mountaineering boots compatible with the confirmed crampons
  • Crampons only when the guide confirms snow or ice requires them
  • Ice axe when required by the confirmed snow and ice route
  • Mountaineering helmet when required by the guide
  • Climbing harness for confirmed glacier or rope travel
  • Spare walking socks and a dry base layer

  • Cold-rated sleeping bag for high camps; confirm the comfort rating with the team
  • Insulated sleeping mat when the route does not include a mat
  • Gaiters for snow, wet grass and loose ground
  • Thermos for early starts and cold camps
  • Small summit pack with water, layers, food and essential safety items
  • Dry bags or waterproof protection for clothing and electronics
  • Personal energy snacks for long walking or summit days
  • Light shoes or sandals for accommodation and rest
