Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro: Marangu or Lemosho route?

Huts or tents, shorter or longer, busier or quieter: how to choose your route to Africa’s highest summit.

Two very different journeys

Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres above Tanzania. Both of the routes we offer reach the same summit, Uhuru Peak, and both are non-technical walks. The difference lies in how you sleep, how long you take, and the scenery along the way.

Marangu: huts and a direct line

Marangu is the only route where you sleep in huts rather than tents. It follows a more direct line up and down the same path, which makes the logistics simpler. It suits travellers who prefer a roof over their heads and a shorter trip.

Lemosho: longer, quieter, more scenic

Lemosho approaches from the west through rainforest, heathland, and the Shira Plateau, using tented camps. Its longer profile gives your body more time to adapt to altitude, and it is generally quieter in the early days. If you have the time, it is the route we recommend for the best chance of feeling good on summit night.

Add a safari or Zanzibar

Many guests finish with a few days on safari or relaxing on Zanzibar. Both can be added to either route.
